Iraq

For people still interested in what is going on in Iraq, read Juan Cole's blog. He's a professor of middle eastern history at the University of Michigan, speaks fluent Arabic and Persian, and produces consistently good analysis and news summaries from local Iraqi media.

Tho I understand where it comes from, it's amazing to me that you've had to preface your post with, "For people still interested in what is going on in Iraq..." Tells a lot about where we are mentally/emotionally as culture. Also tells how unbelievably long the war has lasted (fake wars have a way of doing that, I guess).

Anyway...

It seems some of the media narative is changing a bit recently in how the situation--the word "war" is so last year--is portrayed. I've noticed a real focus on the human stories behind the bombings and mortar attacks.

Is this an intentional mandate by certain news agencies (I'm looking at you here, NPR) to put a more human face on the conflict--perhaps in the attempt to rally public support to withdraw troops?

Or is it that the story over there is too "played" and media are looking for new ways to report the same events (killings, violence, etc.*)?

* "etc." seems somehow disrespectful, no?
