Wow

An elephant paints a self-portrait.

I'm not even joking when I say that elephant is a better artist than me.

I'm now convinced that reincarnation exists. That elephant has human soul.

I feel like I just witnessed THE culminating, defining moment in the history of all the species of the world: the moment man taught another creature with a different genetic makeup (i.e. not a monkey) to express what it sees in nature through a paintbrush.

Don't scientists say that the defining moment for man was when he began to paint what was in his mind on the walls of caves... That freaking elephant didn't have a model--it was all in his head.

Granted, I wonder what kind of terrible acts were committed in order to "train" the elephant to take paint to paper. And isn't it weird how each paint stroke of the elephant's body starts by tracing over a previous stroke (the only exception is the first stroke, then of course the flower and ground)?

Anyway, this freaks me out because I've recently been mulling over the idea that true human evolution will /should bring us in closer communication with the rest of the natural, living world--that instead of moving toward telepathy, we're moving toward understand the superlanguage: the language of life.

Watching this, it's like we're training other animals to speak our language. We're also equipping elephants with the basic tools for critical, higher thought and self-reflection.
